What is AV Preeminent®?
Martindale-Hubbell® is the leading directory of attorneys in the United
States’ law firm industry. The paper edition contains listings for
local and foreign attorneys, law schools/professors, state bar associations,
and summaries of every state’s laws. The online version of Martindale-Hubbell®
includes a directory of US and Canadian attorneys, as well as Peer Review
Ratings. The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings™ helps the person
seeking legal assistance identify, evaluate, and select the best-suited
attorney for their legal issues. People who are looking for an attorney
may read the Peer Review Ratings to select an attorney with the highest
ethical standards and professionalism.
The Peer Review Ratings consist of Martindale-Hubbell’s Client Review
Ratings™ and the lawyer’s professional credentials, and provide
an inclusive view of the lawyer’s skills and knowledge. A lawyer
receives a Peer Review Rating based on evaluations by fellow attorneys,
members of the bar, and members of the court throughout the United States
and Canada. If you wish to hire an Irvine Probate and Bankruptcy lawyer
who has an AV Preeminent® Rating, please contact Peter Rasla &
Associates, P.L.C. An attorney usually receives their first review about
three years after their admission to the bar. LexisNexis enables online
Peer Review Ratings surveys of lawyers across many jurisdictions and locations,
as well as those who are in similar areas of practice as the attorney
who is subject to the rating.
Reviewers must assess their fellow attorney’s ethical standards and
their ability to practice said area of law. A Very High General Ethical
Standards rating and a Legal Ability numerical rating are combined to
reflect a Peer Review Rating. A General Ethical Standards rating means
that the attorney follows all necessary rules and codes of conduct relevant
to practicing law. Lawyers who have been ranked Very High may move on
to the next step in the ratings process, which is Legal Ability. These
ratings are based on performance in five important areas- legal knowledge,
analytical capabilities, judgment, communication ability, and legal experience.
AV Preeminent® Ratings
After a lawyer has been assessed on their legal ability, they will receive
an AV Preeminent® Rating, a BV Distinguished® Rating, or will
be distinguished as Rated. An AV Preeminent® Rating is between a 4.5
and 5.0, and is a testament to the fact that the attorney’s peers
believe that the attorney is one of the best lawyers in their field. A
BV Distinguished Rating is a 3.0-4.4, and is an outstanding rating for
a lawyer who has a few years’ experience. If an attorney is Rated,
it means they scored a 1.0-2.9, and they have demonstrated the Very High
standards of General Ethical Standing. LexisNexis ensures that ratings
are fair by comparing them to other attorneys in the same areas of practice
via a specific practice areas list. This list is based on user behavior,
research on developing areas of law, and other methods of legal research.
LexisNexis updates this list on a regular basis to reflect the constant
changes in the legal industry.
How Ratings are Determined
Any lawyer who is listed on martindale.com and lawyers.com and has been
admitted to the bar in Canada or the United States for at least three
years is able to receive a peer rating. As previously stated, the reviewers
are members of the bar, fellow lawyers, and judges who are from similar
practice areas and/or industries as the lawyer who is eligible to receive
a rating. They must have practiced with or know the lawyer, and have the
ability to rate the lawyer on their professional ethical standards and
legal ability. A lawyer may request a review by nominating their own peer
references. LexisNexis will then ask their peer references to complete
an online peer review evaluation, and the references will be incorporated
into the rating process. All Peer Review Ratings review material is anonymous,
but it may be possible for the rated lawyer to determine who gave certain reviews.
